We speak about legends all the time. It seems that anyone who had a sniff of a career feels they can lay claim to the word - LEGENDARY. But if there are any bands who truly deserve that hallowed title they are Victoria’s native sons Bum and Vancouver’s Pointed Sticks. A pair of truly legendary bands, whose brief careers bookended the West Coast punk rock scene in the 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s who return to join forces for two shows (Friday June 12 in Victoria & Saturday June 13 in Nanaimo) as part of the Harpo’s Redux series.

Pointed Sticks came out of the same nascent Vancouver punk scene which spawned DOA, Modernettes and the Subhumans. After releasing three 45’s and an LP of crystalline power pop through 1978-80 they were signed by the powerhouse UK Stiff label - the first of the BC bands to ‘make it big’. But, as these things tend to go, the group dissolved dissolved soon after - a single, solitary 45 the last testament to their enormous promise…

Flash forward to 1993 and Victoria’s very own Bum had just released their debut CD “Wanna Smash Sensation” to huge critical acclaim, the likes of which their string of 7” singles had merely hinted at. A little over one year later, as fans in Spain, Germany and Japan frothed at the mouth for their buzzsaw pop punk the band abruptly dissolved and went their separate ways to form Budokan, The Suite Sixteen and perform with the Smugglers.

Two bands, gone way before their time… until now.

On Friday June 12th at 8:30pm (doors 8:00) Bum and Pointed Sticks perform at Upstairs Cabaret in Victoria BC. The Bastion Square club is known to many as the former home of Harpo’s Cabaret. That ‘legendary’ venue was where Bum played their first live show ever and it was also where the Pointed Sticks made their Victoria debut in 1979, albeit getting fired after the first night of a three day run for being "too punk rock".

Wrapping up the mini tour on Saturday June 13, at 9:00 pm (8:30 doors) at Nanaimo’s Cambie is a perfect homecoming for some of the bands members - and the first time Pointed Sticks have been there since 1981. Special guests on the Saturday night are Nanaimo’s Teenage Tiger - a great night of solid rock and roll.

So if you ever said “I wish I’d seen them back in the day…” well now is your chance. Don’t make that mistake again.
