Jill Leggett coordinates the Days for Girls Come Sew with Me Rockingham. Days for Girls (DFG) are an international charity helping women in developing countries regain dignity and worth through meeting the need for appropriate reusable feminine hygiene.
DFGs Come sew with Me Rockingham has been sewing kits since September 2013. Most of the kits sewn by DFGs Come Sew with Me are sent to Kerasawara Nepal with the Backpacker Medics. Volunteers from DFGs Come Sew with Me are raising money to go to Nepal to buy sewing machines, all fabric and to teach sewing of the kits to the women of Kerasawara. This will be achieved in conjunctions with the Backpacker Medics.
Lisa Gendall from Backpacker Medics has been to Kerasawara, Nepal as a volunteer for the Backpacker Medics and was involved with the Women’s Health Initiative and also the health census which has led to the stove project.
The concept behind the Kerasawara Women’s Health Initiative is pretty simple: it is a ‘train the trainer’ model aimed at raising the traditionally poor level of women’s health and education in Nepal. During late February 2016, a select group of six Kerasawara women were given training in basic anatomy and physiology, ante-natal, post-natal and obstetric care, gynaecological problems and paediatric first aid. These women now fill the role of women’s health advocates throughout the area- at once assisting MCHC staff with treatment and education and providing ongoing support for women and young girls in their community. The Kerasawara Stove Project aims to address the problem of Household Air Pollution in the Kerasawara community by partnering with The Himalayan Stove Project to fund and install fuel efficient chimney stoves in all village homes.
